The most common form of Shungite is black with a shimmery metallic luster due to the presence of carbon. Shungite’s color ranges from black, deep charcoal gray to lighter shades of gray with some pieces having parallel bands or curved bands running through them. Its luster ranges from dull to vitreous depending on the piece’s composition. Authentic Shungite stones should possess a dark greyish hue or sheen on its surface when viewed in direct light. In addition, it should feel heavy to the touch – because of its density and high carbon content – compared with other stones like quartz or marble.
