Small Ammonite

One of the most widely known fossils, ammonites are eoliths of now-extinct marine mollusks called ammonoids. Due to the sheer number of ammonoids before they became extinct 65 million years ago, there is quite an abundance of fossils found today. The colors in Ammonites are produced by light reflecting off of layers within the fossilized shell and interacting, much the way oil on water produces a rainbow sheen.

The ammonite mollusk was a cephalopod with a shell in a coiled, spiral shape. Due to their body shape, these fossilized creatures are symbols of continual change and evolution. With a Moh's hardness scale of only 4, they can be a bit fragile and should be cleansed with lukewarm water and mild soap, then dried with a soft cloth with no additional cleaning agents.
